Clean Girl Makeup Look
I'm so pleased that this beauty trend is coming back, I feel like I've been living it forever. My goal here is to provide you with the best products to make that clean girl makeup look achievable. This is the "no makeup makeup" look, maybe your model off-duty, Bella Hadid, vibe if that's your thing. Remember you can always use the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Database to check on how clean bands are. So let's get to it and I'll share with you my favorite brands to achieve this clean girl look. Applying makeup is meant to be fun, so if you're not enjoying it and aren't into it, you do you! You're beautiful no matter what.
Sunscreen
This is so important, you need a base to protect your beautiful skin from the sun. Remember that sunscreen is never a trend and your future self with thank you for your glowy skin.
The tricky part I've found with sunscreen is you have to find the right one or else you're going to be getting some serious blemishes.
My favorites are Supergoop's “Mineral Sheerscreen” with 30 SPF. I have pretty sensitive skin and this one is light and does a good job covering and protecting. It has a slight white cast to it, so it might not be for every skin tone, but I do like it
Skin Tint
The caveat for me here is that I have yet to find a skin tint that doesn't upset my face. My skin type is combination, but super sensitive, which makes foundations/tints tough. So you'll have to explore this one on your own, but I figured I'd highlight Ilia’s “Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40” (it's such a good clean brand), for its effortless and fresh skin tint. It's the natural foundation and natural makeup that gives you that fresh-faced, dewy skin that we all long for.
This is the clean base to start with, and depending on your skin type you probably don't even need powder. Make sure the skin tint is smooth on your skin and is a good color match.
The nice thing is applying foundation with your hands is encouraged here!
Concealer
I have dark circles under my eyes (they're genetic), so I'm always looking for a creamy concealer. I discovered Cover FX “Power Play” by watching insane amounts of beauty bloggers on YouTube. I wanted to find a clean concealer that behaved more like a traditional concealer (I tried a few brands that I hated), but this Cover FX has been the clear winner. It comes in 30 shades, but I’m quite fair so use shade “P Light 2”.
I aim to have my natural features just enhanced slightly. While we all wish we naturally looked like Hailey Bieber, I think the most beautiful trend is feeling comfortable as you!
I also use concealer (as we all do) for spots on my face that are a little too prominent. Cover FX is up to the task.
I also learned recently it's a Canadian Brand. Sadly, that means it's harder to find stateside (it's no longer sold at ULTA or Sephora). I had to order my last Cover FX creamy concealer via the internet.
Cream Blush
Cream blush is a must for the clean girl makeup beauty trend. I love flushed cheeks and it's arguable that I probably use more than the regular person. I did do a post on my favorite clean brands for blush. But Ilia, Honest Beauty, and Westman Atelier all are excellent in my book and are perfect for this clean look.
Just a little on your cheeks, and nose, and blend out with a brush, and voila!
My favorite cheek colour by Ilia (multi-stick product) is "lady bird" for a more natural look, and "A Fine Romance" for a more berry-forward look. I just add a bit to my cheekbones and lips and call it a day. This can even do double duty on lips and cheeks.
One trick I read about years ago, in probably Cosmo was doing a layer of minimal blush, using bronzer, and then adding one more layer of blush on your cheeks. Blending it all a bit to give you a nice sun-kissed glow.
My favorite these days has been The Sun Show Moisturizing Baked Bronzer by Kosas, in Medium-golden bronze. But head's up, a little goes a long way.
I don't use anything to contour or shape my face, it's not my thing, but that's probably because I still need to learn how to do it and blend the colors correctly.
Mascara
Mascara is great, I almost think you don't need any other eye makeup. A few swipes on your lashes and your face are transformed. My favorite these days has been the Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara + Lash Primer. It's not too expensive, doesn't irritate my eyes, and gives your lashes a natural lift. It doesn't have a super thin wand if that's something you care about, but I do like it as a product and for my clean look.
The Honest Beauty coats my lashes well, gives them a great shape, and doesn't run down my face by the end of the day.
Eyebrows
No clean girl look is complete without eyebrows. I like the Anastasia Beverly Hills products and they are for the most part very good if you look at the Environmental Working Group ratings. Brows frame the face. Some people like to fill in their brows, I have gotten into only using brow gel, and leaving my brows their natural color. It looks effortless but makes you look pulled together.
If you're feeling like you're really out of time, just brush your brows and call it a day, fluffy brows are the goal, and just a little bit of product to keep them in place is usually all you need. You don't have to achieve a glamorous look every day. I just need my brows to not fall, which is usually my goal.
Lips
Tinted lip balm, lip gloss whatever your druthers, I think a little red something is extra beautiful. These days I've been using Chantecaille for my clean girl pout. The Chantecaille Lip Tint Hydrating Balm in "Madeira" has been my go-to for everyday looks. If I want to get a little fancier and go the glossy lips route, I use Brilliant Lip Gloss in "Classic"
Hair
I have particularly curly hair and so getting a slick bun is challenging sometimes. I don't usually add anything to my hair when it's pulled back for extra shine.
Add a pair of gold hoops, (my favorite are Meijuri) and head for the door ready to meet the day!
