How to Apply Cream Blush

Ahh cream blush—We remember a time when we bought some drugstore brand powder, and slapped it on hoping I didn’t look too clownish. Luckily with time (and the help of some educated friends), I’ve now found a few brands which I love. They’re clean, which means it’s better for YOU. And I’ve listed out three different brands at different price points.

Why do you need to use clean beauty products? Here’s the thing about our skin, it absorbs everything. So even if you’re super careful about everything else that your consuming, you still need to be thoughtful about what is going on your skin. But, buyer beware “clean” on a label doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe to use. Companies will say “clean” but the FDA and other governmental agencies aren’t actually checking for endocrine-disrupting chemicals (it’s usually things like salmonella), so it’s up to you to make sure your beauty and makeup is safe to use on your skin.

I like using the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep website, which I talk about in this blog post. You can search by brand or by product and they give the item a rating. If the items are in the green zone you can rest assured it’s on the safer side, but if it goes to the orange or red categories (rating is on a scale from EWR Verified, and 1-10 where 1 is the best and 10 is the worst) then you should probably rethink buying.

  1. HONEST BEAUTY CREME CHEEK BLUSH $15.99 (EWR Verified)

  2. ILIA MULTI-STICK $34 (EWR 3)

  3. WESTMAN ATELIER BABY CHEEKS BLUSH STICK $48 (EWR 1-3)

How do you apply cream blush? Just like powder blush!

I like to do one layer of cream blush on my cheek bones, a layer of bronzer and then top it off with one more layer of blush. I find it’s a great way to blend colors (I’m currently using two different colors of the ILIA multi-stick, lady bird and a fine romance colors). Where do you apply blush? I apply blush on my cheek bones and a little on my nose to make it look like I’ve just come back from a glorious beach vacation. These days I use a brush, but sometimes I like just using my hands! Once the cream blush warms up, it’s very easy to move around and I think hands can make for a more natural look.
